In April 1977 the Council of the Flinders University of South Australia formally approved the establishment, within the University´s School of Humanities, of the Centre for Research in the New Literatures in English (CRNLE). The first conference to be organised by the CRNLE was held, less than a year after the Centre´s inception, at Flinders University from the 20th to the 22nd of February, 1978. To the best of our knowledge this was also the first conference devoted exclusively to discussion of the work of Patrick White, Australian novelist and dramatist, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. This volume of essays is an outcome of research developments within English literature studies at Flinders University, and represents for the CRNLE - being its first book publication - a formative moment in the Centre's history. Although most future publications of the CRNLE will result from research activities within the Centre, Patrick White: A Critical Symposium nevertheless embodies one of the primary aims of the Centre: to bring to it scholars with research interests in common thus enabling them, together with local members of the Centre, to benefit from exchange of information and to further their particular research endeavours. In holding the National Seminar on Patrick White, the Centre wanted to provide an opportunity not only for established critics but also for younger scholars currently working on Patrick White to present some of their findings to an informed and specialist audience. The present volume reflects this intention as well as the CRNLE´s policy of encouraging worthwhile research in Commonwealth and other new literatures in English. In a real sense, then, Patrick White: A Critical Symposium is a volume of Proceedings, and we trust that the critical public will regard it as such. 12mo.
