1.7 kg; eight volumes, volume I -- 96 pages; volume II -- 112 pages; volume III -- 152 pages; volume IV -- 184 pages, last page blank; volume V -- 216 pages; volume VI -- 246 pages, last two pages blank; volume VII -- 246 pages; volume VIII -- 260 pages. The first two volumes have colour illustrations as well as black-and-white illustrations, the next six volumes have black-and-white line drawings, and reproductions of photographs in black-and-white. The first four volumes each have a language list, the last four volumes offer notes and comments at the end of each book. The eight books -- 1 for each of the grades that then comprised the primary school -- were first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1928 and 1930. Second editions of all but the first book, with very few changes in content, appeared some 10 years later. Beginning in the 1950s, new departmental publications gradually replaced the old books with the exception of the fifth and sixth books, which survived until the late 1960s, when commercially produced reading material front took over in schools. The contributors included most of the major British and Australian writers, together with many American and European authors. Interestingly, the majority of these were not writing specifically for children, so that the students were conducted early into the wide world of literature. It was material, diverse in style, and complex in language, that called for imaginative, emotional and intellectual responses of considerable maturity. -- Kelvin Edwards from the slipcase. The original pink slipcase has faded unevenly, to a pale green on the front and sides. All of the eight volumes are slightly darker on the spine, where protected by the slipcase. The slipcase has a 1 inch crack at the left-hand side of the front panel, some tape on the front panel, and a sticker removal mark on the right-hand side of the slip box.
