Kitty was born in Poland in 1926, and at the outbreak of war, she and her family fled SS persecution. The family was forced to separate, and Kitty and her mother worked as labourers in Germany until they were identified as Jews and arrested in March 1942. After a spell in various prisons they were sentenced to death, but then commited instead to Auschwitz, the most dreadful of all concentration camps. Kitty describes in harrowing detail the day-to-day struggle for survival in the 25 square mile complex; the calculating, persistent degradation of the inmates; the crippling slave labour; the savage dogs and the SS women; the constant, acute hunger; and the regular selections for the gas chambers. Kitty saw millions go their death, but she and her mother managed to survive. In November 1944, after nearly 18 months in the hellish Auschwitz, she and thousands of others were driven on foot across country from camp to camp as the Allies advanced. Only 200 survived. This is the full account of her reminiscences. As one reporter said of her "As we got to know her, the reason why she lived when so many others died ceased to be a mystery, and hope superseded the gloom and despair cast by Auschwitz".
