Dustwrapper ever so slightly rubbed; trace of spotting to edges; gift inscription to front pastedown. Very good condition. "The Union Buildings in Pretoria symbolise to a far greater extent than any other building in the Republic of South Africa the soul and essence of the State. Although Parliament is situated in Cape Town, Pretoria is the administrative seat of the Government, with the Union Buildings as the symbol of authority. The unique status of this building is not only the result of its historical or symbolic importance. It is also undoubtedly one of the most stately buildings in our country, where it graces Pretoria majestically on the heights of Meintjeskop. Construction commenced in 1910. On completion in November 1913, it was the largest building which had been erected in the country till then. As a result of the outbreak of the First World War in the following year, plans for an impressive opening ceremony had to be abandoned. Since then the Union Buildings have formed an integral part of our public life, and with the adjoining gardens they are an object of pride, not only for Pretoria, but also for the country as a whole.
