In an effort to experience what it is like to be black, Griffin underwent a series of treatments in 1959 that resulted in the darkening of his skin. The result was a masterpiece of empathetic revelation. In all editions, the book sold five million copies. In 1969, Griffin was appointed the official biographer of Catholic writer and mystic Thomas Merton. A converted Catholic, Griffin was a longstanding friend of Merton's and a great admirer of his writing. Beginning in August 1969, Griffin undertook a series of visits to Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky, where Merton lived as a member of the Trappist community from 1941 until his death in 1968. While he was there, Griffin kept a journal of his thoughts and impressions. The result is this extraordinary journal, illustrated with eight pages of photos taken by Griffin during his visits. Unfortunately, Griffin did not live to complete the biography. Due to increasing ill health in the 1970s he was asked to give up the project. This journal which he kept, and into which he poured so much thought and feeling, is being published posthumously.
