New York, NY Bantam Books, 1979. Paperback First Ed thus, so stated. Very Good+ in Wraps: shows indications of very careful use: just a touch of wear to the extremities; a faint crease runs top to near the bottom near the outside edge of the front panel and there is a single crease at the backstrip, which also shows a small cellophane tape repair at its head and a tiny scuff area near the heel, where a sticker has been removed; mild rubbing to wrapper covers; binding square and secure; text clean. The pages have tanned a bit, due to aging. Remains close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. 249pp. 32 page Section of Photographs in Black & Whte. First Ed thus, so stated. Mass Market Paperback. Surely you've seen examples of Norman Rockwell's art: maybe not as often now as you did in the middle of the 20th century, but his style is still a familiar one to you. And yet -- how much do you know about the man? Other than admiring magazine covers and once visiting the museum in Stockbridge, Mass., I didn't know any of the particulars of Rockwell's life before I picked this book up at a local library sale. What a find! Author Donald Walton is probably a biased source because of his friendship and professional relationship with the man, so we encounter very few negatives and many positive insights into the persona of Norman Rockwell. The reader's conclusion will be that this was a man who knew early on what he wanted to do in life. He accomplished it, he saw the world, he took on the projects that most captivated his creativity, and above all, he enjoyed life to its fullest. He was a celebrity with thousands of admirers and followers, many of them celebrities themselves. The chronological text moves smoothly and is firmly supplemented with hundreds of b&w photos. A "feel-good" biography when you need one.

art, arts music and photography, biographies, In the late 1960's Norman Rockwell seemed as passe as the couples he portrayed sipping a soda from two straws. The old Saturday Evening Post, for which he had painted covers for more than fifty years, had ceased publication, His one man show in his native New York City- a life long dream for Rockwell-had opened at Dannenberg Galleries on upper Madison Avenue. The reviews were scathing. Yet Donald Walton, then an executive with the Franklin Mint, observed an interesting phenomenon: Although the show was a critical bomb, it was a smashing popular success. Most of the paintings at the exhibit were snapped up immediately. It was clear that people wanted sp,ething to remember Rockwell by-for clearly Rockwell had uniquely captured a nostalgic visiion, the America of a bygone day. In the process of working closely with Rockwell over the following months and years Walton came to know him as a far more complex personality than the folk hero America revered. Norman Rockwell has become a symbol of all that is right with America-an unchanging figure with a pipe in his mouth and a paintbrush in his hand. But Donald Walton shares for the first time numerous ancedotes Rockwell has told him about his life and experiences.
