Glasgow: Brown, Son & Ferguson, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. A A Morton. 220 x 310 mm, x + 84 pp, illustrated in b/w with some colour, maps. The book tells the story of John Smith, whose career saw him rise from boyhood on a Greenland whaler, to the position of master of the 'Lahloo', one of the most successful, and in the opinion of some experts, the most beautiful of the China tea clippers. Smith, of Anstruther, Fife, was born in 1823. His career saw him rise from boyhood on a Greenland whaler, to the position of master of the 'Lahloo', one of the most successful of the China tea clippers. After the loss of the 'Lahloo' in 1872, Smith was employed by Killick Martin of London, to supervise the building of the 'Maju' at Dundee. The 'Maju', an iron clipper, was intended for the China Run. She sailed from Dundee on her maiden voyage bound for Rangoon with Smith in command, but was lost with all hands five days later off Barvas in Lewis, in the 'Great Gale of 21st October, 1874. The details of the disaster are given in contemporary newspaper reports. The story then follows the long widowhood of Smith's wife and the lives of his daughters. Also covered is Smith's lifelong rivalry with John Keay, captain of the ships 'Falcon' and 'Ariel, born in the same street of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife as John Smith.
