El 1 de junio de 2011 fue galardonado con el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras que le fue entregado el 21 de octubre de 2011. Leonard Cohen nació en una familia judía de clase media de ascendencia lituana en Montreal y se crio en Westmount. Su padre, Nathan Cohen, era propietario de una tienda de corte y confección y falleció cuando el joven poeta contaba nueve años de edad.
