This Code of Practice is the final output of a BSRIA research project. The Code is intended to be a working document for designing environmentally benign buildings, minimizing the adverse impact of buildings in use, refurbishing buildings and ultimately disposing of them in an environmentally sound way. This document is aimed at at all professionals involved in determining the type and level of a building's services, and in designing, manufacturing, installing, operating and maintaining their services. It should be of interest to clients, architects, project managers, quantity surveyors, facilities staff and building services engineers. To arrive at the final code, a pilot scheme was established which involved the interest and active participation of a number of organizations with projects at the different stages in the building life cycle. Projects included domestic, public and private sector buildings. The pilot phase assisted in reducing the environmental impact of the projects and processes under scrutiny, and highlighted areas for improvement in the Draft Code. These and comments sought from industry and professional institutions have been considered in revising the Code.
