Sir Arthur Conan Doyle applied the principles of Sherlock Holmes to investigating some real-life mysteries and discussed the cases with his chauffeur. He retrospectively enquired into the 1860 case of the murder of Mary Emsley in East London, when George Mullins claimed the reward by accusing a shoemaker, but was arrested and put on trial for the crime himself. George Edajli, a young Birmingham solicitor, was jailed for cattle maiming in 1903 after apparently writing a number of poison pen letters to people in the mining village where his father was the vicar. Sir Arthur investigated the 1908 theft of the Irish Crown Jewels from Dublin Castle by the invitation of Sir Arthur Vicars, who was considered to have run an organization that lacked any consciousness of security. Conan Doyle secured the release (eventually) of Oscar Slater who had been convicted of the brutal murder of Marion Gilchrist in Glasgow in 1909. Slater had complicated the case by taking a boat to New York immediately after the murder and had to be extradited for the crime. In 1925 Norman Thorne was running a chicken farm in Sussex when his fiancée came unexpectedly one evening claiming that she was pregnant. After her dismembered body was dug up from a chicken run, Sir Arthur conducted various experiments with weights and then tried to save Thorne from the gallows. In every one of the above cases, the person whom Conan Doyle suspected of perpetrating the crime is named, together with the full details of Sir Arthur s investigation. His activities were more than simply looking into miscarriages of justice, but resulted in changes to the English legal system.
