In the last decade before the outbreak of war Austria´s growing dependence upon Germany became a major concern for those in Britain who felt provoked by what they regarded as the "German menace."Professor A. J. P. Taylor says that this book is an admirable work of historical scholarship and makes an important contribution to the understanding of recent history. British policy, or rather lack of policy, in regard to the Habsburg Monarchy is fully explained for the first time. Great Britain had no policy towards Austria-Hungary when the First World War began and indeed regretted that the two countries were at war at all.Later the only policy pursued was an attempt to make a separate peace with the Habsburg Monarchy. The British took up "self determination" only when this failed and then rather as a threat than as a settled objective. Maybe the new national states would have come into existence in any case. That they did so was by no means the British intention, as Wilfried Fest has made clear in this book "Dr. Wilfried Fest was born in Berlin in 1943 and received his education both in Germany and England. After graduating in History and English Language and Literature at the Free University of Berlin in 1967, he spent three years as a Volkswagen scholar at St. Antony´s College, Oxford, researching under the supervision of A. J. P. Taylor. At Oxford he was awarded the degree of D.Phil, for his thesis The Habsburg Monarchy in British Policy 1914-1918, on which this book is based.Prior to pursuing an academic career, Dr. Fest taught in grammar schools in both England and Germany.
