Malcolm McKay tackles a widely held belief that social hierarchies only began in Late Neolithic times. He re-examines the basis of this belief, namely that social rank in prehistoric times can only be proven if there is archaelogical evidence of distinctive differences in burial, and possession of resources (such as metals) that can be traded with other societies. McKay draws on anthropological and ethnographic studies to establish parallels between contemporary hunter and hunter-gatherer societies and those of the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Age. He postulates that societies of this nature, far from being egalitarian, require leadership with its corollary of status; that leadership skills can be passed down to the next generation through parental coaching.
