BICESTER MILITARY RAILWAY. E. R. Lawton and Major M. W. Sackett. Oxford Publishing Co. Ltd., Sparkford. 1992 First edition ISBN 0860934675 160pp Illustrated hardback This copy is in mint unmarked condition in a near mint unclipped dust wrapper. This copy is from the library of the late S. W. Stevens-Stratten author and editor of `Model Railway Constructor´ and `Vintage Roadscene´ an acknowledged authority on rail and road transport. 1992 saw the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Bicester Military Railway in Oxfordshire. Although it was the busiest standard gauge military railway system in the country and had nearly 50 miles of track, it remained almost unknown to most railway enthusiasts. Opened in 1942, the BMR combined the responsibilities of a frequent passenger service, intensive freight trains, busy marshalling yards and an extensive locomotive workshop. This book tells the story of the construction and operation of this railway as well as describing the work of the Army's Central Workshop. Ref FF1 Size: 160pp.
