Nearly 30 years ago, fortuitous circumstances led to the introduction of James Grimoldby, a pioneering photographer, to a young schoolboy, Geoffrey Williams. Several years later, upon his death the photographer's collection was passed over to the author and a selection from these 80-90-year old photographs now form a rare exposition of Edwardian railway locomotives. This book reminds readers of the days when railway engines gleamed with pride and character, when road transport was not a threat, but neither were the railways at the mercy of successive governments with pro-road transport policies. The book attempts to convey the Edwardian "veneer" of respectability, as seen at its best - in everyday life on the railways, through more than 250 photographs, prefaced by a commentary on each of the railway companies represented.
