The Great Western Railway existed from 1833 until 1947 and was Britain's best-loved railway. Spreading from London to the West of England and Wales, much of the system served rural areas. Such routes epitomized the country branch line and the railway's well-kept trains, consisting of Brunswick green locomotives with polished brasswork hauling chocolate and cream liveried passenger coaches, have long been a popular subject for railway modellers. Here, all the branch lines of the GWR, in town and country, are described and illustrated. Some continue in operation today with diesel multiple units, others have been preserved and still have a steam service, whilst the majority have been closed to all traffic. In many cases much remains to be seen with a number of stations fully restored externally by their enthusiastic occupiers.
