On the Southern Railway, main line electrification was achieved through an extension of the existing third-rail schemes. On the LNER, it was decided to adopt 1500v DC (direct current) for the electrification of the Sheffield-Manchester via Woodhead line. This scheme was delayed by the war and the electrified Woodhead route did not open until the early 1950s. The British Railways Modernisation Plan of 1955 called for the introduction of 25kv AC (alternating current) services over the West Coast main line. The first section of this was energised in 1959. Over the next four decades, the 25kv network expanded, culminating in the electrification of the East Coast main line from Kings Cross to Edinburgh shortly before the privatisation of br. With the ongoing programme of upgrading the West Coast main line allied to the recent introduction of Virgins Pendolino stock, the 25kv network has had almost 50 years of development and success. A considerable variety of AC stock, both locomotives and EMUs, have seen service over the 50 years. With the final survivors of the first generation of AC electrics locomotives, the Classes 86 and 87, now coming to the end of their operational career and with most early EMU designs also now consigned to history, this is a good time to produce a pictorial historical retrospective of the AC electric stock employed over this period.
