For a hundred years they had served an English king, but now the atmosphere of lawlessness which followed the usurpation of the English crown by Henry Bolingbroke from the unfortunate Richard II spread disaffection from the firesides of disgruntled peasants to the halls of their lords. Owen Glyn Dwr (Glendower) could claim descent from the princely rulers of Northern Powys and from the royal rulers of Dinefwr in South Wales; educated in England he had fought beside the English in Scot-land. But when the fires of rebellion finally ignited and he was pro-claimed Prince of Wales by the assembled patriots he accepted the role as his hereditary right.-----------------------------------------------------For the first two years he fought a guerilla war against the increasingly frustrated English, withdrawing into the hills when confronted by superior forces. But after a victory at Bryn Glas the rebel army swelled in numbers and for some years he controlled much of Wales, even inaugurating a separate Welsh Parliament. However, following various setbacks in 1408 many of his supporters accepted a pardon and deserted the Cause. Glyn Dwr was hunted once again, but the English failed to capture him.
