Terence Dalton. Very Good/Very Good. 1990. Hard Cover. Sm 4to 0861380746 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Numerous illustrations. Maps. Photographs. ix, 182 pages clean and tight. EAST ANGLIAN - men and ' women were widely scattered by the war, and the story of the region in 1943 cannot be told entirely within the context of the eastern counties. Many thousands of men were serving in the armed forces far from home, and some of them were . suffering great hardship and privation as Japanese slave labour on the construction of a railway to link Siam and Burma; it became known as the Railway of Death. At the same time the region became temporary home to tens of thousands of men who went forth week by week to fight their war in the skies over Germany and Occupied Europe. The arrival of the Americans and the building of their bases had a profound effect on life in East Anglia. While their menfolk were away fighting in far-off theatres of war, labouring and dying in prisoner-of-war camps or training for the great battles that were to come, East Anglian wives kept their homes running in the face of severe rationing and also did full-time. jobs to assist the war effort. Social problems did arise as a result of the stresses of wartime life, and Douglas Brown examines these as well as other aspects of life in the region in this book, the fifth of a series which seeks to tell how ordinary people faced up to the challenges and the heartbreak of the Second World War. .
