According to the numbering system used by the printer, 13,845 case-notes, abridged from English law books, were contained in its 263 titles. Because this system did not allow for case-notes abridged under more than one title or for short citations to which numbers were not given, a true count would be somewhat different. Whatever the total, La Graunde Abridgement was also a supreme undertaking of English printing in the reign of Henry VIII. .. Fitzherbert's achievement and its relation to the legal literature that preceded it..cannot properly be measured in terms of size alone. But the immensity of Fitzherbert's task can be seen in his purpose, which was nothing less than to abridge all notes of significant cases at common law."
