Gordon Donaldson, a Shetlander by ancestry, writes here with warmth and affection of his Isles of Home. He made his first visit to Shetland in 1921 as a small boy and since then has made over sixty visits, all of which he has carefully recorded. The themes in this book are of contrast and change. The author writes, "The 70's of the twentieth century will very likely go down in history as the era of the greatest revolution which ever took place in Shetland's economy and society, as a result of the exploitation of the oil discovered under the bed of the North Sea east of Shetland and the creation of the massive oil base at Sullom Voe." Without minimizing these recent changes, Gordon Donaldson looks back over the half century before the oil era and records less spectacular and more gradual changes in the way of life. The decline and collapse of the herring fishing, the disappearance of the whaling from Roeness Voe, Collafirth and Olnafirth, the changing pattern of North Isles transport, life on the croft - these are all aspects examined by the author. In his visits up to 1983, Gordon Donaldson reckons he has spent a total of 987 days in the islands and with the keenness of eye of the professional historian he has noted, with pen and camera, the changes perhaps not so apparent to Shetlanders themselves. But his observations are neither dull nor didactic - they are lively and fond and will find a treasured place on the bookshelves of all who love Shetland. This book is illustrated with sixty black and white illustrations, many of them previously unpublished. Hardcover, Label: P. Harris, P. Harris, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 1983, Studio: P. Harris.
