[From front jacket flap] The bird paintings of Jemima Blackburn have given her a place beside the great names of the art world and can be seen at Windsor Castle in The Royal Collection, in the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum and the National Gallery of Scotland. During her lifetime Jemima Blackburn (1823 - 1909) was acknowledged as an ornithologist of some importance who corresponded with many of the most eminent naturalists of the period and was recognised by her peers as one of the leading bird painters of the day. Undoubtedly she had considerable skill and originality but her innovative method of painting 'from nature', as she described it, stood her apart from all the others who painted from dead or stuffed specimens. Yet Jemima Blackburn's work has remained relatively unknown this century despite high praise and glowing notices during her lifetime. . . This stunning book is a luxurious guide to many of Britain's rare and common birds, as well as a showpiece for Blackburn's prodigious talents. Born and brought up in Scotland, Jemima Blackburn went to London in her mid-teens and there met the Duke of Wellington and became friendly with Landseer who declared that in the drawing of animals he had nothing to teach her. She formed friendships with many of the leading artists of her day, most especially with Ruskin and with Millais. In 1849 she found her intellectual soulmate (and husband) in Hugh Blackburn, Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University. Their home was a centre to which visiting artists, musicians and the literati gravitated. Their friends and relatives included some of the most celebrated figures of the century: Lord Kelvin, Trollope, the Prince of Wales, Benjamin Disraeli and, not least, Jemima's cousin James Clerk Maxwell, the father of modern physics. The Blackburns travelled extensively: Europe, North Africa, Iceland, but most of her time was spent at their home in its incomparable setting on the west coast of Scotland.
