Surrey, UK: Springwood Books. Very Good/Very Good. 1983. First Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo 0862541131 Dust jacket complete. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine.Ownership label on front flap. Darkening to pages. 224 pages clean and tight. Dimensions: 22.9 x 14.5 x 2.3 cm. The title of this book, the first to be written by a Mission Commander of Special Operations Executive, comes from Churchill's directive in July 1940. No allied armies were in the field on the continent of Europe; the spirit of resistance within occupied lands had to be supported from outside in 'ungentlemanly warfare'. The author describes his experiences in the Sudan and Ethiopia and in Central Europe before the war, and how he turned them to account when he found himself plunged into clandestine operations in 1940. He was deeply involved in the campaign which restored the Emperor to the Ethiopian throne, and then returned to London to help build up SOE. In Algiers and subsequently in Italy he worked closely with Allied colleagues, steering a sometimes difficult course between the aims of the military and the politicians while meeting with increasing need of support for the brave men and women in occupied territory. His book does not attempt to re-tell their story but describes for the first time the organization of their recruitment, training, supply and communication systems. It gives too an account of the struggle at the highest level to establish priorities and obtain backing and equipment in the successive stages of operations, from secret intelligence and clandestine action to guerilla and then open warfare - and freedom. .
