It was this feeling that compelled me to take a closer look at Gorbals, when I became aware of this part of Glasgow in 1964. Born in East London's inner city Hoxton, the exact ghetto-replica of Gorbals at that time, it did not really cost me that much heartsearching to take my cameras and direct them towards what hope there was. The gloom and textural character of the neglected buildings seemed to be humanised by the immense vitality of the children. As usual THEY were the patient, tolerant sufferers, the victims when adult freewill had degenerated or terminated, lapsed, for whatever reason, but far from giving an impression of apathy, the children appeared to accept their surroundings and enjoy life as it came. The camera in a human social situation is a very powerful tool in its ability to intercept and preserve. People identify happily with camera images which are an honest portrayal of the truth. Therefore, these have important retrospective power and lasting value. It is a profoundly loving gesture to initiate the making of a portrait photograph. It is an involvement-in, a mutual embrace, far beyond the seeming triviality of its methods. The pictures in this book were taken in this loving spirit, and the joyful trust is mirrored in the children's faces. Because of my own deprived background I could identify with the children's feelings; there was a rapport between us. Could it be that many modern-day children are more disadvantaged than their Gorbals kind?
