education and reference, William George (Bill) Crampton, PhD, MEd (1936 - 1997) was a British vexillologist (Vexillology is the "scientific study of the history, symbolism and usage of flags or, by extension, any interest in flags in general".) His chief legacy, the Flag Institute, has hundreds of members in the UK and overseas. He was recognised as Britain's foremost authority on flags by government agencies, the flag trade, the media, publishers, librarians and vexillologists of all ages and backgrounds. He was also renowned internationally, and his status was recognised by his election as President of F�d�ration internationale des associations vexillologiques, the International Federation of Vexillological Associations. Following his death in 1997, the newly opened Library of the Flag Institute in Kingston upon Hull was named in his honour as the William Crampton Library in 1999. In this book, William Crampton has written a comprehensive guide to the flags of all the nations and states of the world. As well as serving as an invaluable identification guide, the book explains how geographical position, cultural influences and political and historical events have shaped the design of many flags and how this is evident in the symbolism of the colors and emblems.
