In the early years of Victoria's reign the city's medieval background was still very apparent, the majority of buildings being constructed well before the mid-eighteenth century. Their quietly decaying creeper-clad walls had a photogenic antiquity which, with the rebuilding and restoration of our own times, has sadly now been lost. The century or so covered by this evocative selection of photographs saw the transformation of the old Oxford. There was much new building for the University and colleges which encroached on the old streets, the growth of scientific study led to new laboratories and museums; there was a new earnestness in learning and religion. Familiar scenes are filled with life and people where, in the early photographs, they seem strangely empty and still. Against the solid and splendid background of University and college buildings, with their setting of gardens, trees and riverside, this collection of photographs by John Rhodes also records life and work at Oxford. Here are the ceremonies, customs and personalities of the University; the undergraduates occupied in study or, more often in the photographs at least, at leisure - the dubs, societies, sports, commemoration balls and events on the river. We are also granted glimpses of a more personal life; the college servants, the undergraduates' rooms, a don's new and spacious family house in north Oxford. Pages 125 onwards detached from binding, otherwise Good.
