An enthusiastic sportsman and member of the Officers Training Corps, he enlisted in the Territorial Army – the London Rifle Brigade before the outbreak of war – and spent most of the next seven years as a soldier and officer.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- He was commissioned into the Royal Ulster Rifles and subsequently, as an officer of the 6th Airborne Division, took part in the D-Day glider landings of 6th June 1944. He was later transferred to the Parachute Regiment, taking command of a company in the 2nd Battalion. He also served as liaison officer for the newly-formed Belgian Army.
