There are few accounts however by those who actually endured its tedium and terror. Matthew Cooper was just such a one, a typical British subaltern in what was essentially an infantryman's war. In 1914 he rushed into uniform and found himself in the Western Front trenches, where he and his comrades could measure their life expectancy in weeks. Despite the horror, despite the danger, Matthew managed to keep a diary, only recently discovered, compiled and edited with a commentary by his son Anthony. The resulting record does not deal in the large scale tactics of major battles where individual men were reduced to statistics, nor does it attempt to glorify heroic deeds. Instead, this personal and understated narrative conveys an acceptance of hardship and horror which will make the modern reader wonder at the fortitude displayed during two seemingly unbearable years at the Front. -----------------------------------------------------------Matthew's first hand accounts, such as that of the battle for the Messines Ridge in June 1917, are further enhanced by the reproduction of contemporary photographs and documents. Many of the places he mentions are easily visited today with the help of the maps provided.
