He showed not only the magnificent landscapes and seascapes, but also the people and their life, thus giving us a fascinating window into the social history of a hundred years ago. These lantern slides, meticulously hand-coloured, are faithfully reproduced in this exquisite book, together with the text of the original 'lantern lecture'. L. M. H. Smith, the lantern-slide collector who found them in the basement of a Yorkshire mill which was about to be demolished, has added an introduction which fills in the background of the Victorian magic lantern lectures. This book will be of interest to all students of lantern slides and early photography, and to social historians; but is also a unique and delightful souvenir of these magical Scottish Islands.
