The steam trains of Sydney, Australia were once the backbone of the world's largest steam tram network. Beginning with a temporary line to the International Exhibition of 1897, the system spread rapidly and helped to create suburbs such as Coogee, Bondi Beach, Dulwich Hill, Leichhardt, and Rozelle. At their peak at the turn of the century (just before electrification), they made 1200 daily journeys throughout the City, carrying some 70 million passengers a year. But they were condemned for their "bloody accident rate, the nefarious deeds of larrikin conductors, wolf-whistling drivers and [a] Bondi train that 'shot through'" the city to the distress of pedestrians.
