The South Island gold rushes of the 1860s attracted miners by the thousands to work the rivers and their banks for alluvial gold, some struck it rich, most did not. When these "easy" pickings were exhausted mining become more capital intensive and by 1863 interest in winning the riches of the rivers by dredging was gaining strength. In this fine study Hearn and Hargreaves cover the development of gold dredging industry, mainly concentrated in Otago. Not only do they follow the history, growth, technology, innovation, investment, successes and eventual run-down of the dredging era, but also examine the legacy of this aspect of gold extraction which is even today evident in areas where the dredge tailings have left a ruined landscape. By the beginning of World War One the dredging boom was virtually over. Supporting the excellent text is a first class collection of photographs of dredges and the men who operated them. These, in turn, are complemented by graphs, a map, diagrams and documents. This an ex-library copy. 95 pages, illustrations throughout, three view diagrams of the Matau dredge on e/papers, just over five page appendix of registered dredging companies, refernces, bibliography and index. Brown hard covers with gilt front/spine titles VG with few tape marks to both boards, small library stamp top front pastedown, three stamps top FFEP, stamp with small paper adhesion FFEP verso, stamp top half title with small paper adhesion below script, small stamp top title page with donation label below titles, two stamps, one with ink codes, title page verso, library stamp top left introduction page, text block otherwise excellent with no further library markings, diagramatic rear e/papers have three library stamps and codes label at top with two small areas paper adhesion. DJ, with colour art front panel, is plastic protected and VG with ink library codes to spine and label left lower front edge.
