For many years scholars have puzzled over features of early sixteenth century Norman charts which suggest some knowledge of Australia and even of New Zealand. In this monograph, the author meticulously analyses all the relevant charts and French source books and puts forward the conclusion that the Spanish caravel, the San Lesmes, may hold the key to these and related enigmas, and that the credit for the discovery of Australia and New Zealand by Europeans rightly belongs, not to the Dutch, but to Spanish and Portuguese navigators.
