The great International Exhibition held in Christchurch in 1906-07, marking New Zealand's transition from Colony to Dominion, provided a panoply of aspirations and achievements covering almost every aspect of the colony's life from agricultural products to machinery, and from the visual arts to music. It attracted nearly two million visitors when the total population of the country was less than half that. In this book eleven authorities in their field recreate the atmosphere and spirit of the Exhibition, from Joseph Maddison's white and gold building, to the gardens surrounding it, the impressive Maori Pa, which also hosted visitors from the Pacific Islands, to the comprehensive exhibits of the British Government, Canada and the Australian states. Economic, political and social aspects are discussed, as well as the visual arts, including a large number of paintings and sculptures and the more appealing exhibits of the women's Arts and Crafts movement. Alfred Hill's Orchestra, which played almost every day for the entire six months of the Exhibition, became a showpiece, in its own way as popular as "Wonderful' with its water-chute, helter-skelter and spaceship. Perhaps the most poignant contributions to this volume are those of the Maori visitors, given here in the original language and in translation. As the first contemporary book to describe a New Zealand exhibition in depth, this book is a record of a historical event and an inspiring contribution to our social history.
