[From front jacket flap] The Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang comprise one of the world's richest stores of ancient and medieval Buddhist art. Although remote from the main centers of Chinese civilization, Dunhuang was a key station on the "Silk Road" that linked China with Western Asia and Europe, and also a point along the main route through which Indian Buddhism was introduced into China. An arid climate and comparative isolation from the upheavals of history have fortunately preserved Dunhuang's Buddhist art, housed in hundreds of elaborately decorated cave-temples. In the 492 extant grottoes created between the 4th and 14th centuries, are 4,500 meters of murals and over 2,000 painted sculptures. This album of color photographs by Peng Huashi, a celebrated art photographer, illustrates 116 sections of the murals and 84 of the painted sculptures that were selected by specialists of the Dunhuang Institute for Cultural Relics ot represent the best of each period of Dunhuang art. The plates are accompanied by a long introduction and extensive notes that give detailed information on each work of art - its history, style, artistic and cultural significance..
