Iii 1913 as a voung lad in Ardmore, John R. Bunn watched the early day ge- ologists come into his uncles car dealer- ship in their wide-brimmed hats, high leather boots, and jodphurs. He decided he too would become a geologist. Thai young boy's dreams turned into reality and led him through fires and floods and financial ups and downs during his 00 year search for oil all over the United States and Mexico. At age 25 Bunn convinced oil man Joe Cromwell to drill on a structure bunn had mapped in Oklahoma City. This resulted in the discovery well that opened the giant Oklahoma City field. Bunn went on to make additional discoveries in East Texas, South Texas, New Mexico. Utah, and Louisiana, and he mapped huge por- tions ol the United States. On the basis of information he gathered, the axis ol the entire Uintah Basin of Utah was changed. Bunn's contributions to the drilling in- dustry likewise ate extensive. When he was 30, he was commissioned In Cono- cos legendary Dan Mot an to design and construct a unique drilling rig; this he did and then used it to drill on Conoco's vast concessions in Mexico. Bunn also pi- oneered main innovative chilling tech- niques €"such as gas-powered, slim-hole chilling; and in the 1950s he designed and constructed the first successful hydraulic rig- Now in his 80s. Bunn still is actively en- gaged in the oil business working up prospects at his office in Tyler, Texas. Ap- propriately, he recently was named "Pi- oneer Geologist" by the F.ast Texas Geological Society, a fitting tribute to a geologist and petroleum engineer who has devoted his life to the search for oil.
