Chicago, IL: Art Institute Of Chicago, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Chicago, IL: Art Institute Of Chicago, 1999. Softcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 144 pages. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. Now considered a late-modern art photography classic. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The Exhibition Monograph is now scarce. A brilliant production by Carl Zahn: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Essays by Colin Westerbeck, Arata Isozaki, and Fuminore Yokoe. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In glossy integral pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Art Institute of Chicago from May 8 to September 12, 1999. Presents "Yasuhiro Ishimoto: A Tale of Two Cities". The great Japanese photographer's work in two places: Tokyo and Chicago. Through his radical juxtaposition of disparate images, Ishimoto delineates the striking differences between the two cities, both of which he photographed with an acute eye. There is, at the same time, a wonderful and moving sense of "elective affinities" about the imagery because of his lifelong devotion/affection for his adopted city (Chicago), where he studied, developed, and matured as an artist, and his fierce attachment/loyalty to home (Tokyo), where he is revered as a National Artist. Ishimoto donated 200 vintage prints, representing the work of a lifetime, to the Art Institute of Chicago, which now owns the single largest and most important Permanent Collection of his work in the West. Yasuhiro Ishimoto died on February 6, 2012 at the age of 90. His stature as "photographer's photographer" will remain secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Yasuhiro Ishimoto collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Even in Japan, Yasuhiro Ishimoto was known for being averse to book signings. This title is a late-modern photography classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the Exhibition Monograph still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Almost ALL other copies available online, un-signed, have serious flaws yet command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. Yasuhiro Ishimoto's "Someday, Somewhere" and "Chicago, Chicago" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER YASUHIRO ISHIMOTO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0865591709.

Although he is a Japanese photographer who has lived in Tokyo for more than 45 years, Yasuhiro Ishimoto received his art education in the late 1940s and early 1950s at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where he studied under Harry Callahan. Ishimoto's photographs of Chicago document a period of profound social, political, and racial change and record the character of the city from its lakefront beaches and downtown streets to its South Side neighborhoods. Ishimoto returned to Japan in 1953 and began a documentation of Tokyo. In his work, Tokyo and Chicago have become sister cities in the personal vision of an artist whose patience as a photographer and tenacity of observation have enabled him to produce the extraordinary body of work evident in such books as Someday Somewhere and Chicago, Chicago. He has also produced two books on Katsura villa, another on flowers, and several others on Japanese subjects.Large as is the range of Ishimoto's tale of two cities, in recent years another side of his sensibility has come to the fore in very subtle studies of rotting leaves, footprints in snow, cloud formations, and wind-ruffled water at his feet. Now 77, Ishimoto is revealing a meditative dimension that has brought him recognition as a "Person of Cultural Distinction" in Japan and serious regard worldwide for his artistic achievements. Paperback, Label: Art Institute of Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 1999-05-28, Studio: Art Institute of Chicago, Verkaufsrang: 2668782.
