Trained in traditional woodcarving in Tokyo, where he lived most of his long life, he went on to become a leader in the Japanese Creative Print movement. In the mid-1960s, he joined his daughter in Washington, DC, where he worked for the next 30 years, blending his Japanese vision with American motifs and scenes. The book features essays by Helen Merritt, a leading scholar on modern Japanese art, and Bernd Jesse, assistant curator of Japanese Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Also included are remembrances of the artist by Keiko Moore and the collectors Theodore Van Zelst and his wife.
