Prof. Alfred Mayer's love for plants, animals and humans is expressed candidly and sensitively in this private and professional account of his life which spans an important period in the history of this closing century. He describes his origins in Germany, the foresight of the family to seek safe havens in Holland and then wartime England, and finally in Israel where Mayer participated in building science in the emerging state. Together with creative research programs which resulted in important contributions to several topics in plant science, particularly seed germination, Mayer played a significant role in developing the teaching curriculum in biology as a committed teacher, author and editor. He was instrumental in the organizing of science and helped to lay the foundations of the life sciences at the growing Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He also describes his worldwide collaborations and travels to colleagues abroad, and organization and participation in conferences. While the book is factual and descriptive, its special quality lies in the author's reflections and attitudes towards science, research, teaching, students, family, plants and animals, and the meaning of life itself. Most moving is his particularly close relationship with his late wife, Nitza, to whose memory this book is dedicated.
