Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Weyer's Life and Work -- It is remarkable how little is known about Johann Weyer, the man who wrote what is, according to Sigmund Freud, one of the ten most significant books of all time, De praestigiis daemonum. The engraving of Weyer which appears on the title page of his De praestigiis daemonum (1583) depicts a man in his early sixties, almost bald, but quite vigorous and pensive, holding in his right hand a skull (the symbol of his medical profession) and in his left hand a rolled paper (probably a symbol of his literary activity). In the background, in clear letters, stands his motto, Vince te ipsum ("Conquer yourself"), a most fitting expression of the very meaning of his work -- namely, the unusual fortitude and self-restraint needed in order to overcome stiongly rooted prejudices. -- Since he left no autobiography, and no biography of him was written by any of his contemporaries, the data concerning his life are rather scanty. However, several passages regarding himself, his family, and his work, casually mentioned in his De praestigiis daemonum, are helpful in throwing some light on his life and personality. And there are occasional references to him in contemporary works and correspondence, mostly by opponents to his thesis on witchcraft. The few biographical studies devoted to him, mainly by H. Eschbach, C. Binz, L. Dooren, J. J. Cobben, and R. van Nahl have been based on this scant evidence.1 In the following study I use these various sources -- in addition, of course, to the De praestigiis daemonum itself -- in an attempt to present as comprehensive a portrait of Weyer as possible. -- Although the exact date of Weyer's birth is not known, most of his biographers agree that he was born in 1515 in the town of Graves. He hirmelf refers in his work to "a town called Graves (my birthplace), on the Meuse river near the border of Brabant? (book 3, chap. 36). ISBN 9780866980838Rennaissance 1991.
