Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, Tempe, first edition, 1998. 2 vols, cloth, 8vo, 24 cm,. xxxi, 754 + v, 217 pp, [149] pp of plates, ills. Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Medieval & Renaissance texts & studies series; v. 166. From the introduction: "The Guide completes the survey of pictorial material in Tudor books by beginning where Edward Hodnett's catalogue, English Woodcuts 1480-1535, ends and by including mention of the engravings cited in Arthur Hind's Engraving in England. It includes the more than 5,000 woodcuts and engravings in all books printed between 1536 and 1603 in Britain and in books printed in English on the continent, as listed in the Short-Title Catalogue (STC). The new cuts mingle with the older Hodnett ones in the works we describe. We see an exponential growth in the new kinds of illustrated books: the manuals - how to swim, how to grow hops, how to do magical tricks, how to garden, and how to survey; the navigational guides; the Bibles; the catechisms; the social satire; the chronicles; the emblem books; the accurate herbals; the religious propaganda; the physiognomy books; and books on heraldry, topical events, and exploration. The list is only suggestive. We see new kinds of images. To select a very few from those listed in the Subject Index: portraits; allegory of Law and Grace; architecture; coins; witches; maps; monsters; the personifications of virtues and vices; the Apocalypse; medical, musical, and measuring instruments; and mathematical diagrams. Some of the new woodcuts are designed and made in Britain; many are copies of pictures in continental books from Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and other places. Booklabel on each front pastedown endpaper, otherwise Fine.
