Topics include, on the language side, the interaction of synchrony and diachrony in certain Germanic phonological developments; a unitary semantic analysis of the East Norwegian accent shift triggered by the negation marker ikke; and linguistic, orthographic, and metrical evidence for Old Norse syllable structure. On the literature side, articles discuss such topics as: images of the Germanic drinking hall in the Old Saxon Heliand, the figure of Grendel's mother and the representation of love and vengeance in Beowulf, and the possible influence of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich in Rainer Maria Rilke's early poem Die Landung.
