With the commemoration of the transfer of the statue of the Virgin Mary from Antwerp to Brussels in 1348, the Brussels authorities began to support an annual procession on the Sunday before Pentecost in her honor. About a century later a play was added concentrating each year on one of the Joys of Mary. This volume, a parallel text in Dutch and English, holds the remaining texts, two and seven, out of seven total, which include prologues and epilogues. They give emphasis to the devotion of the Virgin as a special protector of the city of Brussels and note the importance of the public ceremony and the political allegiance of the community. The plays had a political role in part, evident in the address to the ruling authorities, but they also reflect political and religious change. In part they are an assertion of religious orthodoxy, and at the same time, echoing widespread contemporary practice in other countries, they give insight into the way resourceful and innovative dramatization of traditional material could stimulate as well as express religious experience.
