Piddington's achievements were many: he helped shape industrial arbitration in New South Wales; forced John Lange to introduce child endowment; defended the basic wage during the Depression; fought federal attempts to restrict free speech; and became a pre-eminent authority on the Australian economy through conducting state and federal commissions. Now virtually unknown, Piddington attracted controversy and condemnation in the 1920s and 30s for being a 'dangerous radical'. His criticisms of postwar nationalist governments and the 'money power', and later his rulings as New South Wales Industrial Commissioner made him an enemy to be destroyed. He resigned in 1932 following Lang's sacking and lost his place in history in a decade of conservative rule. Always maintaining his support for liberalism and democracy when others retreated into conservatism and even fascism, Piddington was the last radical liberal of his generation.
