Covers are rubbed and thumbed at the edges. Some fading towards the spine and corners. Page edges are uniformly discoloured, so too are the pages throughout. Simple binding is sturdy, yet showing some age-- a little stiff. This book is in good condition. *We always describe the faults of our books meticulously; they usually present better than they sound.

Jun 01, 1983. Fair. A significant contribution to the history of Australian involvement in the Vietnam War (more correctly termed the Second Indo-China War) between 1962 and 1975. All of its eight contributors were prominent critics of Allied participation in the war while it was being waged and each visited Vietnam at least once during that period. Primarily political scientists, each brings not only first-hand experience of the war but also considerable scholarly expertise to his/her chapter, essentially arguing that Australia's participation in Vietnam was an all-round failure. The editor asserts that 'Australian institutions and elites, and the great public itself, largely failed the test of Vietnam in the years to 1972'. Greg Clark, formerly an officer in the Dept of External Affairs, stresses that the basic assumption on which Australian involvement rested was totally wrong: Canberra saw Hanoi as a puppet in the hands of Peking at a time when it was clearly much more closely allied to Moscow. Kim Beazley Jr. corrects the oft-heard belief that the Australian Labor Party was unequivocally opposed to Australia's participation throughout the war. Frank Frost argues that the military failed in Vietnam because it was given too much to do. Jane Ross discusses the experiences of conscripts in Vietnam. While accepting the war, most national servicemen in Vietnam grew to dislike the army and the people of South Vietnam they were ostensibly there to protect. Michael Hamel-Green, once a well-known draft resister, gives a well organised historical account of the anti-conscription movement in Australia between 1964 and 1972, claiming that a succession of conservative governments failed to convince the community that conscription for Vietnam was either necessary or just. Murray Goot and Rodney Tiffen attack the public opinion poll organisations, which they accuse of polling in such a way as to boost the appearance of support for intervention in Vietnam and to downplay any sense of opposition. FREE standard shipping worldwide, all orders upgraded to priority airmail (average delivery time for US, Europe, Japan is 6 working days, other countries vary - please feel free to email us for details). --- Missing the dust jacket. Pages are clean and untanned, free of any foxing/spotting, with good secure binding. Minor faint remnants of erased pencil underlining, else text is unmarked, no writing, no highlighting of any kind. Gentle internal creasing. --- Hardcover, George Allen & Unwin 1983, stated 1st edition, 226pp, index, map endpapers. --- Fast priority airmail from Ireland.
