Few authors had better access to old NZ records than Ray Grover, who for many years was on the staff or the Alexander Turnbull Library, later becoming Director of Natiional Archives. This work of narrative history is based largely on his research on the early days of European settlement in the southern area of the North Island and the north of the South Island. These were tempestuous days, with Maori from both sides of Cook Strait seeking to protect and retain their land from settlers who were continually seeking to obtain more to meet their ambitions. The story is related througfh the experiences of one European man, married to a Maori woman, who thus faces the demands of two peoples. This character, Jock Niccol, is virtually the only fictitious figure of the book's wide cast. Other personalities and events are based on historic fact. The former includes Maori leaders Rangihaeata and Rauparaha and their Ngati Toa tribal connections, the Wakefields of the NZ Company, representing avericious settler expectations, Governors Grey and FitzRoy. These and other characters, are all projected in their historical roles. Events prominant in the book -- apart from disputes over land --- include inter-tribal strife, particularly north from Wellington, the influence of early traders, whalers and sealers, the Missionaries, unscrupulous conduct by the NZ Company, the cause and results of the Wairau "massacre" and other instances of conflict between settler interests and Maori resistance. Here is a graphic account of early associations between Maori and pioneer, historic fact advanced accurately, but informally, to illustrate life for native and settler in those times, as well as the views and conduct of two races, each with very differerent approaches to the realities of change with its opportunities and difficulties. An assertive look at history, presented in an unconventional and stimulating way.First edition from John McIndoe of 1982, 371 pages including appendix, sources and bibliography. Illustrated with more than 40 b/w images on glossy plates. These, with one photo exception, are mainly reproductions of contempory paintings, sketches and drawings, there are also five maps. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, the text block is excellent throughout, no inscriptions or other markings. DJ with b/w painting to front is VG with light/unobtrusive surface wear front, back and to front flap fold. This is a heavy book which may require additional postage for overseas delivery.
