The first two nights I found my centre jackal resting lovingly on my c0mpanion's shoulders, while mine were left to the society of a fearful draft from wind blowing through the imperfect sides of the waggon. I then declared that the jackal must not only judge between us, but that he must rigidly adhere to a central position in the waggon. We had many a laugh as we woke in the morning looking to see if the animal had travelled east or west as we slept. Sometimes the first to wake would be discovered stealthily covering her neighbour with a double share of rug. A nightly consultation was held to discuss the question, "What shall we have for supper?" Curry and rice was the foundation, served sometimes with sardines, prawns, or potted meat, for of course we had only tinned provisions, since as yet no game had been shot. Our pim dc r¢"sistanc1.' had a basis of curry and rice mingled with tinned rabbit, peas, beans, and potatoes, au naturel. Thus, with a relish of Indian... The author was a trained nurse and had arrived in Cape Town in 1895. Her book deals with two nursing expeditions that she organised in 1896. The first was to Krugersdorp to look after the wounded from the abortive Jameson Raid. The second (comprising the greater part of the book) was to Rhodesia providing assistance in Umtali and Salisbury during the Second Matabele War (Mashona uprising).
