William Thomas Angove was born at Mount Pleasant, Camborne, Cornwall, on August 26, 1854, the fourth child of Thomas and Henrietta Angove. His father, like so many others in Cornwall, was associated with the tin and copper mining industry and was manager of the South Tolcarne Mining Company of Camborne. The family's association with mining went back three generations before Thomas Angove and before that they were yeoman farmers. The surname Angove from its Cornish origin means "the smith"; an being the definite article and gove meaning smith. The name has been common in Cornwall for more than five centuries, and if the different families stem from a common ancestor the connection has long since been lost. Even in the 17th and 18th centuries there were Angoves in about 20 different towns in Cornwall, and few of these appear to be closely related. William Thomas Angove's forebears were from the parish of Illogan, northeast of Camborne, and were not connected with the Angove families in nearby Camborne, Redruth or Phillack. There were, however, branches of the Illogan family who lived for one or more generations at Redruth, Truro, Phillack and Falmouth. Other identifiable but seemingly unrelated Angove families were at Falmouth and the nearby Helston-Sithney-Breage district. Others were scattered around Cornwall in towns such as St. Leven, Sancreed, St. Erth, St. Hilary and St. Cleer.
