When the British Army were defeated at Isandhlwana, Wolseley was sent by Disraeli to Natal to succeed Lord Chelmsford in military activities and to assume administrative responsibilities as High Commissioner for South East Africa, thus bringing him into conflict with Sir Bartle Frere. Covers the period when he was charged with the pacification of Zululand and the Transvaal until his return to England. He was over-concerned with his own ambitions including wishing to succeed to the Command in India, even to the Viceroyalty. He articulates the record of a man who knew he was right and who tolerantly battled on in a world of fools and rogues.
