Fair to Good trade paperback, 67 pages; covers are edge-worn, liquid has been spilt on the front wrap and seeped through to also stain the front endpapers; in addition, four small sections of the surface layer of the front wrap are missing; there are no inscriptions, stamps or text markings. Ndebele is the current Chancellor of the University of Johannesburg, and former Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Cape Town. Ndamse is a distinguished educationist and former lecturer at the University of Fort Hare. Buthelezi is a South African politician and Zulu tribal leader; he founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975, was Chief Minister of the KwaZulu bantustan until 1994, and Minister of Home Affairs of South Africa from 1994 to 2004. Khoapa was a co-founder (with Steve Biko) of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa in 1966; five years later, the Black Community Programme (publisher of this book) was launched under his direction. Most importantly for the collector is that this book was edited by anti-Apartheid activist Bantu Stephen (Steve) Biiko, and is one of the relatively few items under his name published before his 1977 death at the age of 30 in South African Police custody. In his introduction to this book, Biko wrote: "We have felt and observed in the past the existence of a great vacuum in our literary world and newspapers. So many things are said so often to us, about us and for us, but seldom by us. This has created a dependency mood amongst us which has given rise to the present tendency to look at ourselves in terms of how we are interpreted by the white press. we blacks must on our own develop those agencies that we need, and not look up to unsympathetic and often hostile quarters to offer these to us."
