Half of the text deals almost exclusively with the War Of The Axe alone, (the 7th Frontier War of 1846-1847). Stationed in the centre of the action near to Fort Peddie his journal records events as they happened. Also he recounts the War of Umlangeni (the 8th Frontier War of 1850-1852) centred around King Williams's Town where he was then located. An educated man, his journal is the best civilian account with much detail and a good style. The balance of the book deals with various aspects of his missionary work, recording his translation of the Bible into a uniform Xhosa edition which was his major work, "just what suits my cast of mind".

Dustwrapper edgeworn, and partially sunned, with archival tape repairs to reverse of edges; edges, endpapers and outermost leaves foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. 'John W. Appleyard, 1814-1874, already has a place in South African and Wesleyan Missionary history as translator and printer of the first Xosa Bible. Appleyard's Journal has never been published. Only the second volume has survived the vicissitudes of time, and it is that which is here presented. The Journal touches only briefly on Appleyard's translating and printing of the Scriptures, but the important stages in this work are clearly marked and the significance of brief and modest entries is illustrated in extensive footnoting. Under the direction of Rev. William Shaw, Appleyard completed a task which had daunted many other good men. The Cape Eastern Frontier was the scene of all of Appleyard's missionary labours, apart from two years (1844-1845) spent in Colesberg. About half of the Journal concerns the War of the Axe (1846-1847). . The War of Umlangeni, 1850-1852, centred around King William's Town and again Appleyard was in the thick of it. . Appleyard was an active missionary, itinerating among kraals, constructing new buildings on various mission stations, and travelling extensively. He and his wife, Sarah, daughter of Rev. J. Archbell, suffered much together, including the death of their only child. He was not given to introspection and soul-searching but he had a vivid sense of God's purpose for the natives, a purpose which his work did much to further.'.
