Harting (the author of the standard bibliography on hawking - the Bibliotheca Accipitraria) worked in the office of the Field for some years. During this time he received many letters seeking information on hawks and hawking. He discovered that the recognised works of reference on the subject did not touch upon or explain in adequate detail to the beginner simple practical points. It was whilst he was researching that he added his introduction and valued comments to this book, which Harting certainly felt justified its place in his standard work: and a s a permanent reference book on sparrowhawks and goshawks in its own right. Harting will be shown as the author of this work from 1572 as the identity of the real author has been lost to time. The book's introduction is extensive and gives a good overview of the antiquity of hawking in England and in English literature. The book is completed with a useful glossary of hawking terms. Book in good condition with very little wear. Top edge of text block a little toned. Occasional light spotting mainly to prelims and to text block edges, otherwise very clean internally. The book does have a bit of a musty odour but no evidence of any damp damage anywhere (if the mustiness wasn't present we would grade this book as very good). Bookseller sticker to ffep. Dust jacket very good. Unclipped. Very lightly rubbed and soiled with some light edge wear. Jacket in a protective sleeve.
